monday.com Pros: Best Features

monday.com timeline view

So, what are the best bits of the monday.com experience for project management?

1. Project Management Views Optionality

A range of views in monday.com is something a lot of people like and with the WorkOS concept a lot of that is really taken out of the way. Views include the likes of board, table, timeline, calendar, chart and dashboard - with more even in the views essentials setup that you can use and mould yourself.

Here's some of the views the project management has on offer:

  • Kanban - This is great for board management and a traditional way to see and move items between order of completion and priorities. Others use it in management mode to see who and what people are working on in this board view.
  • Tables - With filters, sorting and great custom field and property management, this allows you to build out in a much easier fashion than Microsoft Excel and is one of the strongest features of monday.com project management views to see what everyone's working on at a glance.
  • Timeline - Like a gantt view, this will give you a window into the campaign progress. Whether that is your team's product launch timeline or even a marketing campaign success - with dependencies, filters and other gantt features, it's easy to use.
  • Dashboard - This is one of the best features, despite being trapped in their premium plans, allows users to create a widget dashboard of whatever they want to see. Maybe a product launch day and the numbers coming in from campaigns or even a sales team's progress in real-time displayed on a 3rd party screen in the office. A killer view.
monday.com review, calendar mode in work management
  • Charts - Difficult to first learn, but a great way to use alongside dashboards to express data and great for data-based teams that like to make decisions based on the information they capture from their 3rd party integrations. A good example could be a marketing team tracking a campaign via Facebook Ads integration with monday.com - they could use charts to connect this real-time insight and data.
  • Calendar - Great for teams in sales and marketing to associate workload to dates and see them in a calendar view for better management.

2. Speedy Setup Nature

Ease of Setup - the WorkOS concept for larger teams makes monday.com much more attractive. So much is invested into setting up a project management software and this concept sort of removes the need for vast templates and a centre for your team's projects as each product is designed per department.

  • Templates - The range of templates will give your team any setup that you can copy and then refine further within your workspace. This is a dramatic timesaver. A good example could be a marketing team looking to copy a "content calendar" into their space to adapt to their liking, but saves them roughly 30 minutes creating it.
  • WorkOS - As explained more above, this can save scenario-specific needs like marketing, sales and development to get their team up and running 2-3x faster.

3. Marketplace Time Savers

Integrations & Automations - there's a vast array of integrations. Integrations allow you to connect tools like Gmail (3rd-party), Miro and many more tools for better collaborating and automations help to reduce doing recurring elements.

monday.com review, views center
  • Views Centre - You can copy views and browse from more options like maps and even a file gallery that can be used in your monday.com workspace for better viewing.
  • Integrations - The range of integrations are great and cover a range of needs. Marketing teams could use the deep MailChimp integration, for project management, connect with Google Drive for better file management. There's over 200+ options.
  • Automations - There's an automation for everything. If your team want to save a 30s activity that is recurring like "nudging a team member on the completion of a task" - that can be done using the automations centre.

monday.com Cons

What falls short with monday.com? And what should we worry about? Let's unpack this so your team has everything bad and not ideal around using monday.com workspace.

monday.com showcasing project management on desktop and mobile

1. Learning Curve

Whilst the nature of WorkOS does help, it is sort of like turning up to an all you can eat buffet - with the staff explaining everything and you feel confident - and then when you go down a new aisle, you explore a whole new array of foods or ways of eating - sort of like monday.com, there's rabbit holes to go down in learning.

2. Limited Dashboards

Dashboards are limited in the paid plans until you get to Pro. Dashboards can only bring in up to 1 board in the Basic, 5 in the Standard and 10 in Pro. Subject to change, but one of monday.com's best features. This sucks because dashboard is a super helpful feature, but again, they know this.

3. Guest Access

Locked under free and basic, you'll need to pay Standard to get a window into guest access and share with external collaborators. This is a shame as many other project management tools offer guest access for clients.

How much does monday.com cost?

monday.com work management costs $9 for basic, $12 for standard, and $19 for pro packages. This is pricing per user, per month.

monday.com Pricing: Explained

This gets a little confusing, so stick with us. monday.com pricing is broken into what WorkOS you go for and how many people you have in your team.

Updated February 2024.

These are the two key indicators to monday.com pricing:

monday.com pricing

Work management (a WorkOS option in monday.com) is the most all-round project management experience and the service most people will use - this pricing is different from the four other WorkOS services they offer, please note this.

Pricing for monday.com is fairly traditional - for most of the project management software out there - the average price is between $8-12 for the general plan with partings either side suitable for smaller or larger teams.

Wait, different WorkOS pricing?

Yes, each WorkOS experience is priced differently. You won't notice if you go with the basic WorkOS (Work Management) but if you go with Sales CRM or development, you will be charged typically more for the pricing options that range from Basic CRM to Enterprise.

Tools like chart view, time tracking and dependencies are locked under monday.com Pro as well as a host of other features. This is again common for most project management software. monday.com is reasonable and priced accordingly to the market.

monday.com Review: Our Final Thoughts

Is monday.com right for my team? Is it something we should be considering?

monday.com board view for planning tasks in projects

1. It solves 80-90% of your team's needs

monday.com is one of the best in-class project management software. It is probably perfect for the all-round team situations. If you want a more 80-90% problems solved solution then monday.com is for you. This is great for all-rounder teams and departments.

If you're team is looking more detailed at say gantt charts. I'm not sure it will get you to the 100% mark. Then I would be looking at more specific needs like TeamGantt, GanttPRO etc.

2. What's wrong with monday.com?

Learning monday.com will take time, but if you want to get the most of the experience, you'll probably need to upgrade to their highest plans to get the most of it. Pricing is also very complication for expanding teams and teams that are scaling too.

And yes, you will likely have to pay for the Standard/Pro plan to get better and more feature dense access, but largely that's common in most project management tools.

3. A more general project management software

monday.com as a whole isn't really a specific software like GanttPRO - that rocks at gantt charts - it presents all-rounder nature which makes it popular with a lot of people that want good quality project management views, integrations with popular productivity software, automations and document management too in one base for a team.

Very simply. monday.com is one of the better project management software designed for all types of departments, versus a specific project management scenario.

Is monday.com any good?

monday.com works well for medium to large businesses. If you're in the hunt for a feature-heavy, very visual project management software that like Asana, a lot of people get on with monday.com from day one - thanks to the easy-to-setup nature.

Best features include dashboards builder, workdocs, automates & integrations. This makes monday.com a popular project management tool with those who want more flexibility in their project management, but not too much like Airtable & SmartSuite.

What is monday.com used for?

Mainly used by teams looking for all round use cases. monday.com reviews show a wide range of use cases like marketing teams using to launch ad campaigns, teams using it to manage a full sales pipeline with the sales CRM experience and even teams remotely using it to manage an a-sync company and everyday task management.

monday.com Alternatives

ClickUp, Asana, Trello & SmartSuite are all good monday.com alternatives:

  • ClickUp - probably the most like-for-like alternatives to monday.com
  • Asana - similar in visual nature and easy to get started with, less feature dense
  • Trello - backed by Atlassian and easy to use, not as feature dense like Asana
  • SmartSuite - if you're in the hunt for something more flexible than monday.com

If you're in the hunt for more project management software, we'd recommend using us.

Feature Spotlight: Dashboards & Widgets

monday.com charts and dashboards

The ability to add to monday.com Dashboard is one of their best features, locked under a higher account level, this allows businesses to add charts, goals, and even gantt charts all within a dashboard view helping teams to get a bigger zoomed out view of progress.

Is monday.com good for client work?

This is helpful for marketing, sales and professional teams that could be working on a client management basis, although it is worth looking at tools like Paymo. If you want a head-to-head with Paymo vs monday.com, we've got you covered. Otherwise, monday.com actually provides a neat way to allow your team to instant insights in dashboard view.

The ability to manage charts, goals, widgets and views in a dashboard is a fan-favourite.

Automations & Workflows

Monday.com offers a range of automation features designed to help teams save time and streamline their workflows. This is a huge benefit if you and your team do small, but repeatable actions day-to-day like nudge someone when a part of a process moves from "doing" to "done" - simple thing, but automations can solve that for you.

Automations inside of monday.com for recurring tasks

With the platform's automation tools, users can create custom triggers and actions that automatically perform tasks such as sending notifications, updating statuses, and assigning tasks to team members.

Remember, one of the best recommendations is to explore workflows as a whole to fully to better skill up when starting using project management software.

For example, users can set up automation to send an email to a client when a project status changes, or to assign tasks to team members based on specific criteria.

ClickUp vs monday.com?

One of the biggest dilemmas is that monday.com and ClickUp on paper one of the closest tools, with some variation many small to medium sized teams struggle to choose between them both as ooze similar features for project management like range of project views, document management and automations & integrations.

Getting started with monday.com

This is what the WorkOS looks like in monday.com and it offers 5 key workspaces for teams to get started with and save time using instead of building, they are as following:

  • Work Management - better for general use & widely available
  • Sales CRM - perfect for sales team for managing relationships & deals
  • Marketer - for marketing teams to build campaign management workspaces
  • Dev - a workspace setup for the development teams and product dev
  • Projects - more general for managing projects & portfolios

This will save you and your team time and provide them with a better opening experience to monday.com, as templates and setups are provided taking some of the weight out of managing a workspace from the start despite the relatively easy nature of monday.com
