Capacities

Capacities is a note-taking application with no folders and a focus on objects.

Capacities Review - AI Summary

Capacities is celebrated as a visually stunning, object-oriented Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) app that redefines traditional note-taking and organization. Users highlight its unique approach, replacing folders with interconnected objects that allow for dynamic categorization, tagging, and linking of information. Features like seamless synchronization, robust automation, and flexible customization make Capacities ideal for creating a "second brain," particularly for neurodiverse users who appreciate its adaptable structure. The active development team and supportive community further enhance the user experience. While the learning curve and lack of an iPad app or offline support are noted, Capacities' innovative design and ongoing updates have positioned it as a leading PKM tool for diverse needs.

Create design but buggy tags and doesn't prioritise AI enough

I think they have the best philosophy around where your notes should be and I used then for quite a bit and still semi-use them. However tagging is important for me and they didn't address tags just not showing up or counting the tags well while the team did not respond to this issue. They also deprioritised AI to focus on building the tablet app and offline support which is just not that important for me and seems to ignore the current tech cycle. They also are not really doing the notes graph view well. In my opinion Roam Research is still the best in this. Overall they do have a faster development pace than a lot of other solutions so perhaps my rating will improve later on

My favorite but…

This is 100% my favorite software to use! The design is beautiful and the object based note taking makes a lot of sense practically My only gripe with it is personal. As a quick note taker, it wasn’t the best for me because it’ll require a bit more time to input notes OR coming back later to refine your notes. Obviously you can do as little or as much as you want in capacities but in order to get the best use case of it, it requires a bit more time for each note. If you are willing to put the work in then it’ll pay off 1000%.

Beautiful and opinionated PKM solution

I love Capacities. Coming from the overwhelming Obsidian, opening this feels like a fresh breeze of oversight paired with robust sync and intentional helpers, all organized to make your thinking and writing life ever so slightly easier. The biggest stumbling block might be its hallmark feature: no folders, just objects. Halfway down the reorganization of your system, you come across the question: "What, again, is an object, and how can I fit my thinking around it?". During the adaptation phase (and I wouldn't say that after 6 months, I am through with that), you stumble upon this a gazillion times and desperately long for the quick fix of a folder system instead of organizing just like your brain thinks. Once you peep the glimmer of REAL connectivity between topics and the bulk of friendly, unintrusive, but mightily helpful automation baked into the system, I will not look back and live with one or the other choice that does not fit my opinion of the PKM world. For example, in outline mode, pressing return creates a new bullet point with the exact formatting after all the indented lines of text in between. Genius! Wonderful! Or if you want to make a collection of transclusions in a text, simply copy/paste a block link into your text and make it look the way you want. Little mighty things like these make me smile and enjoy writing in the app. If any App achieves that, don't look further and stick with it. Pay for it. Heck, even become a believer ;-)

Easy to use and visually beautiful

I love how self-organizing this notes program is. With links, tags, AI and powerful querries. It's easy to find anything. The Object-based note taking is just a take on folders that's more flexible. I really and I love how I can have an object in multiple collections. I love that I can create properties and filter on the properties. It's so easy to change a note from one object to another, to create MOCs, to create a new object out of text, to embed multiple notes in one. I love working in Obsidian, but I also love Capacities - it's a tie for me. I love that they work together - both in markdown, both with properties and wikilinks. I look forward to the day when I can import Obsidian files as easily as I can export Capacities files into Obsidian - should be soon.

Good for PKM tool

I used this as notion alternative, but the object based thing wasnt my thing. Other than that looks promising.

🎖️ Way to go CAP TEAM

Design The design of Capacities is eye-catching, stunning, and visually appealing, especially if you appreciate a strong aesthetic. I make customizable dashboards that are pretty and easy to do while snugging all significant functions, objects, and tags into one streamlined dashboard, which is a big plus for those who enjoy working in a beautiful, organized space. I’m drawn to their colour options, especially the vibrant shades of pink—no dull tones here! Value Capacities offer incredible value, mainly because they are not just about functionality; they are about user engagement. Stefan and Michael's founders frequently seek feedback and genuinely care about users' wants. With their transparent roadmap and regular updates, they’re committed to making the app even better. You’re getting a well-supported app with a team that’s fully invested in the experience. Features One of the features is the object-based system, which is a complete HIT for me. I can attach properties of one object to another, which makes managing related content sooo SIMPLE ADHD brainhere.. For instance, I can link a journal template (one object) to my digital products business (another object). This feature alone makes Capacities highly adaptable to different needs and use cases. Practicality Capacities surpass expectations in terms of practicality. The sync is seamless whether I’m working on my Mac or iPhone. I can start a note on my Mac, and it’s instantly on my iPhone. This level of cross-device functionality saves time and makes it easy to work wherever I am without worrying about syncing issues. - seriously, I update as soon as I'm done typing. This is an ongoing evident issue worldwide with many PKM APPS ;) OK Performance The recent addition of offline notes has been a awesome, especially when working on the go. The app handles everything I throw effortlessly, and the performance remains solid across devices. It’s fast, responsive, and doesn’t lag, which is crucial for staying.'

Great but no cigar - why? No iPad app

Capacities is a great app in many ways, and I can backup that fluffy statement with the fact that I’m a paying Believer for 12+ months. HOWEVER, the fact that no iPad exists and, it seems, not even in development, is a huge minus. In my case it hinders a full commitment to Capacities as the primary (only) PKM system.

Best second brain on the market

I’ve tried them all. Logseq, Obsidian, Bear, Evernote, Tana, Amplenote, Craft, Notion etc. Capacities ticks all the boxes for me and I have stuck with it since its early days. The UI feels familiar. It is very capable but not overly complex (Tana, here’s looking at you). The team listens to feedback and releases great updates on a regular basis. It has become my second brain.

The Best Note-Taking System!

Over the past two years, I've tried out more than a dozen different apps on various operating systems, and Capacities is the only one that has felt effortless from the start. There's no need to waste time trying to figure things out or design complicated structures because Capacities is incredibly intuitive, and its object-oriented approach aligns perfectly with how we think. Kudos to the developers! I'm eagerly following their updates.

In the way to perfection. Only Capacities does…

I am a newly graduated animation design student, 27 years old, and I am obsessed with apps that (in theory) improve our organization and facilitate our day. I say "in theory" because, in reality, that's not quite what happens. I think I spent a lot of time using these apps just for the pleasure of saying I have a second brain, because in reality, I didn't feel a real effect on my day-to-day life. I saw people commenting on them, speaking well about their features, but in reality, I didn't feel this impact in my daily life until I used Capacities. I tested them all (yes, believe me, I tested ALL the productivity/second brain apps out there) and Capacities was the one that truly fulfilled what a software geared towards the theme should do. I don't need to list all its features because they are easy to find on their page, but I will mention those that REALLY made a difference in my day: - **Objects:** I think the main function, the app's differential, is the way things are categorized. Everything can be an 'object': people, books, notes, movies, music... I categorize, separate, and organize absolutely every segment of my life there. If I think something doesn't deserve a category in "objects," I simply place it on a page in the PAGE category (which is an object) and use a tag to specify what it is. Simple, easy to find later, and refer back to when you need to remember the thing. - **Integration with WhatsApp:** it's not necessarily original, but the way sent things are saved directly in your journal makes it easier to organize how each thing will be saved, what object it will be transformed into, mentioned, or if it will just be a reminder to view days later. - **Queries:** I also believe this is one of their differentials.

Rough start, but greate experience so far

Been on the professional plan for a while now, making the switch from Notion. Starting was rough due to the learning curve and I tried a few apps as well: - Obsidian - Logseq - Supernotes - Amplenotes But once I got over that hump (took me a few days), then it's a seamless experience. It takes a page out of Logseq when it comes to daily notes, which allows you to put a central repository of all your notes there, and when things happen, you can create an object (such as a page) to capture more information. So it has structure where needed without becoming too overwhelming. Allows for some freedom as well i.e. tagging objects, pages, across the app. The app is fast, feels lightweight, and the team is constantly making improvements. Capacities is now the first app that I open daily when I start work.

I tried them all, Capacities is the best

The developers have been improving this wonderful program every single month that I've used Capacities. Every month, it gets even better. The features grow, and the performance gets better. They listen and respond to users. I didn't think I'd love the AI features as much as I do. I also love to forward important emails to the program. I love that I can embed Google Docs and Todoist - this makes Capacities my central hub. I use Capacities to collect knowledge, manage my life, and express myself. This program can be used in simple and complex ways. It's up to you—you don't have to adapt to the program; you create it to work the way you need it, and when your needs change, it's easy to reorganize. I don't know why anyone would use anything else.

Great Upcoming PKMS

Strengths - Really great at linking objects together. - Nice UI. Minimal but colourful. - Amazing community, their Discord is very active and helpful. - Good enough iOS app. - Transparent team, and very communicative. Weakness - No offline support... Yet. - Friction sometimes, it cannot be used as fleeting notes. I prefer using Apple Notes, Notesnook or Reflect for fleeting notes. - Sometimes there are inconvenient UX. - Cannot change shortcuts. - AI cannot scour entire knowledge base.

Easy to learn! I love Capacities!

I didn't find it difficult to learn at all, and the documentation is very detailed and easy to follow, so I can use it in more advanced ways. I love that it's so adaptable. Every object can be changed into another object, and every structure in the app is flexible. The AI feature is amazing, too! I've been using Capacities for a year now, and it is open on my computer all day, every day.

Found my 2nd Brain!

All PKM's have a learning curve, Capacities is no different. It Breaks the mould of PKM's and the linear structure that is imposed by many others. A 30 day trial which includes premium features really let's you have a good go at finding the way to structure your information in a way that works for you. This is important for those of us who are Neurodiverse, having ADHD, rigid structures is not how I find or use information. Capacities allows me to structure, find and connect information, thoughts, ideas in the way that I think. The graph view is the cream on top, it allows you to start anywhere and follow trains of thought, taking you to deep information, web connections, images people or whatever information you have in a real working 2nd brain. The app itself is quite new and run by a small dedicated team. Who are responsive, and working hard to deliver all the bells and whistles that everyone always wants. The core of the app as a PKM is solid, for me it out performs any of the others out there with its unique customisation and approach to knowledge managment. It, of course, has AI, basic at present and as they build this capability out it will seriously enhance the solid core, not be the pretty toy that hides the issues of a platform that is too complex or doesn't do that one thing you wish it did. There is so much talk of 2nd brain in the PKM world and how you can set up complex tables, or have it be the one and only tool you ever need in your life. I have tried many over the years. Capacities is the only one that I have come across that delivers the 2nd brain immediately, and it grows and evolves as you do its a living structure not just an endless set of databases that require constant tinkering. I said it really works for us neurodiverse people, yes it does but it also works for everyone. Capacities is possibly the first truly diverse and inclusive 2nd brain we have all been looking for.

Great development team, Excellent product

Object orientation allows me to craft an interface for management of personal information that fits my needs. The user interface is visually attractive and easy to navigate. The product is growing but that's the best news - the development team is keyed into and involved with the active user community. Monthly (and often more frequent updates) continually expand and improve the product. Early Believer - dustydirt1655 (mike)
