Feels right in 2025
I've been following Affine since its early days in 2022. When I first tried it, I loved the vision of a local-first alternative to Notion with infinite canvas capabilities, but back then it was quite rough around the edges with frequent bugs and crashes. I lost all my early test data due to those stability issues - pretty frustrating. A recent YouTube video brought me back to Affine - much like Penpot, another open-source tool that started rough but has improved dramatically, Affine has really come a long way. The UI has been refined, and as someone who regularly uses Notion and tldraw, I found the transition to Affine's interface quite natural. The database blocks have seen major improvements, and the self-hosting experience is much more streamlined now. I've even got it running on my ubuntu NAS, really cool - thinking about trying it on a Raspberry Pi too! While most aspects have improved, the CPU usage can still get high sometimes, especially with larger workspaces. It would be great to see some optimization work on this front. Overall, it's great to see how the project has matured. The Discord community is quite active too, which is always a good sign. Looking forward to seeing what's next!

Good idea, terrible performance.
Since the first month of its birth, I have been using this application and even waiting for improvements for more than a year now and nothing seems to happen, at least on the priority which is usability and performance. The only good thing is the management of your private data, everything else just doesn't work and doesn't work well, any app like Obsidian or Boardmix are literally light years away from Affine. They have released unfinished software, believing that the latest release of Ai is going to get them out of poverty when it's doing the opposite. Don't waste your time with Affine, they don't listen the user.

Unstable - I lost all my data despite making regular backups for multiple months
The app is full of bugs and the devs are too busy trying to add as much useless bloated AI garbage as possible instead of ensuring that the basic functionality works correctly. Things like disappearing notes or documents permanently turning into blank pages is just unacceptable. Half of the tools randomly stop working or lose their settings. The design for the things displayed on the canvas keeps getting worse with every update. Text frames are not scaled correctly to the text and cannot be properly resized. The new default options on every tool look like they were chosen by a colorblind preschool kid who was drunk and had their eyes half closed. With the new 0.15 version the color options for notes got even uglier and there is no way to revert to the normal colors or overwrite the defaults. On top of all of that it turns out it was saving corrupt backups for multiple months which now simply load as an Untitled workspace with no contents all of this just makes this application completely unreliable and unusable and I regret spending multiple months hoping it would become a viable replacement to normal note-taking applications but the developers are simply too incompetent.
